Marcus Garvey Symposium 2026

by C. Henry ADAMS

On March 25th 1917, roughly 109 years ago, Marcus Garvey gave a speech at Big Bethel AME Church in Atlanta, Georgia.

Who was Marcus Garvey?

Why thank you very much for asking.

Marcus Garvey was born August 17th 1887.   For 59 years, he lived on Earth as a Jamaican political activist.

The Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA-ACL) is a Black Nationalist organization founded by Marcus Garvey in 1914 in Jamaica.

June 25, 1922, Mr. Garvey met with the Klu Klux Klan (KKK).   Really?  Yes, really.  Why?

He was interested in separating the black wealth from the white wealth and thought he knew the way.
But, what he failed to realize, was that all people in the United States of America were mixed.

Check your genes.

I can hear someone, somewhere in America saying,  " Say what! "

  • Mission: It continues to promote its original aims, focusing on black pride, community development, and education.

It's purpose:  To promote racial pride, economic independence, and Pan-African unity. Headquartered in Harlem by 1918, it boasted members worldwide, advocating for “Africa for the Africans” to establish businesses and achieve self-sufficiency.

It
functions as a charitable, educational, and constructive society for the uplift of people of African ancestry, with active divisions.

For (3) years annually, Big Bethel A. M. E. Church located in Atlanta, Georgia decided to re-live his Marcus Garvey visit to the pulpit by offering a symposium.

3rd Annual Atlanta Marcus Garvey Symposium - Wednesday March 25th 2026 at Big Bethel AME Church 220 Auburn Avenue, NE Atlanta, Georgia 30303 Time: 6:00 pm EST
